Structural Design Intern (Portland Office)

Froelich Engineers, Inc. is seeking a structural design intern for the Portland, Oregon office. This is an in-person, part-time position, 4-5 days a week (~30-40 hours), during the summer of 2026.

Key Responsibilities

  • Receive training and experience in structural design
  • Exposure to various structural design software
  • Assist engineers on projects in the construction phase with RFI responses and submittal review

  • Attend site visits to review the construction of structural systems and assist in writing the observation report

Position Entails

  • Involvement in project from design to construction phase completion
  • Working closely with architects, team members, and contractors
  • Working as a project manager making independent engineering decisions
  • Responsible for managing and/or supervising; and coordination/reviewing the work of less experienced engineers

Personal Qualifications

  • An attitude of ownership in your work, and client satisfaction in quality of work
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills are required
  • Positive and professional attitude
  • Self-motivated, outgoing individuals who excel when working alongside other team members and clients, and experience as a structural leader for projects
  • Candidates must exhibit a working knowledge in a variety of materials
  • Oregon P.E. license preferred (minimum of PE registration) with 4-12 years of experience in structural design
  • Knowledge of industry computer analysis and design software, such as RISA, RAM, and Revit

Key Responsibilities

  • Design stormwater systems including detention, conveyance, water quality, and infiltration facilities in accordance with local jurisdictional standards
  • Design and coordinate water, sanitary sewer, and storm utility systems, including utility relocations and public improvements when required
  • Develop and review civil construction documents using AutoCAD Civil 3D
  • Perform hydrologic and hydraulic analyses and prepare supporting technical documentation
  • Coordinate directly with architects, structural engineers, landscape architects, surveyors, geotechnical engineers, and public agencies
  • Prepare permit submittals and lead responses to jurisdictional review comments
  • Attend and participate in client meetings, agency meetings, and internal coordination meetings
  • Support construction administration, including responding to RFIs, reviewing submittals, and performing site visits
  • Mentor junior designers and support internal quality control processes

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering
  • Three to eight (3–8) years of civil site design experience (commercial and/or residential development preferred)
  • PE license required • Demonstrated experience in grading design, stormwater management, and utility coordination
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD Civil 3D • Experience working with local jurisdictional standards and permitting processes
  • Strong technical writing and communication skills • Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines with limited oversight
  • Collaborative, team-oriented mindset with leadership potential
  • Construction administration experience preferred
